Be honest.<\/p>\n<p>Yea, you&#8217;re not alone.<\/p>\n<p>Now, raise your hand if you&#8217;ve ever used a pop-up on your website.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s interesting about pop-ups is how good\u00a0they are at\u00a0converting a reader into an email subscriber. You would think that something so hated would be ineffective, but despite our distain\u00a0of these little boxes of frustration\u00a0we use them.<\/p>\n<p>I recently\u00a0ran a series of tests on the pop-up of this site and increased my conversion rate from 2.8% to 6.8%.<\/p>\n<p>That means for every 10,000 visitors I now get an additional <!--more-->410 email subscribers.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Untitled_2_key_196F1745.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"651\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Untitled_2_key_196F1745.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"651\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Over the course of an entire year that increase will produce an additional 7,200 subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>(<strong>Note<\/strong>: thats a\u00a0lot)<\/p>\n<p>Today I&#8217;m going to show you what I did to 2.5x my conversions and then show you how turn your pop-up into an <strong>email sucking machine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Back in January I decided\u00a0that building a high quality\u00a0email list would be\u00a0my sole focus\u00a0in 2014. In the 6 months since then, I&#8217;ve been able to build my list from 224\u00a0subscribers\u00a0to 5,625.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of advanced techniques you could put into place to do this. Creating <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/blog\/grocery-store\/\" target=\"_blank\">post-specific opt-in bonuses<\/a> is far and away the best way to do build your list rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>However, it takes an additional 30-90 minutes per post to create a top notch opt-in bonus. And then you have to do it over and over again for each post.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong, it&#8217;s worth the time and effort but its legit hard work.<\/p>\n<p>Pop-ups are a different story.<\/p>\n<p>They are the 2nd most effective technique I&#8217;ve found and with 1-2 hours of work per month can produce optin rates at or above 6%.<\/p>\n<h2>How I&#8217;ve used pop-ups to grow my list to 5,625 subscribers<\/h2>\n<p>For the past 22 weeks\u00a0this was the\u00a0pop-up that I used.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Videofruit_\u2014_Evernote_Premium_196F129D.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"698\" height=\"461\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Videofruit_\u2014_Evernote_Premium_196F129D.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"698\" height=\"461\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>The design is from a stock template and the pop-up simply\u00a0redirects users back to a blog post that I wrote in January. No ebook or special download, just a blog post.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0time that it ran it was shown 38,299 times and opted into 1,077 times for a conversion rate of 2.82%.<\/p>\n<p>Based on past client work that is an above average conversion rate. I&#8217;ve seen popular sites returning 0.4% conversion rates per 25,000 views.<\/p>\n<p>So, this wasn&#8217;t necessarily a bad incentive\u00a0to begin with. But, I had a pretty good hunch I could improve it.<\/p>\n<h2>How did I 2.5x my conversion rate<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s much easier than you would imagine.<\/p>\n<p>When I setup this\u00a0original\u00a0pop-up the Videofruit blog consisted of a whopping\u00a08 posts. So, I didn&#8217;t\u00a0<strong>really\u00a0<\/strong>know what my readers liked and were interested in. To be completely honest I didn&#8217;t even know who my readers were.<\/p>\n<p>I simply looked at my Google Analytics account, noticed that <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/blog\/gary-case-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">this post<\/a> got more views than the others\u00a0and then I turned\u00a0it into an\u00a0opt-in incentive.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty basic stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone does this&#8230;right?<\/p>\n<p>Nope. No one does (We&#8217;ll get back to this in a minute).<\/p>\n<p>At the time I didn&#8217;t realize what I had done, but turns out it was pretty freaking smart.<\/p>\n<p>That was January. Now, fast forward 5 months to May.<\/p>\n<p>It was late on a Friday\u00a0and I was killing time while waiting for my wife to get home from work. I found myself trodging through my Google Analytics account.<\/p>\n<p>(If you run a website you know how addictive this can be. And by addictive I mean depressing)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when I ran across my traffic graph. Basically it shows all of your traffic for all time in one spot.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when I noticed something.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed several spikes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Audience_Overview_-_Google_Analytics_1970228C.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"112\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Audience_Overview_-_Google_Analytics_1970228C.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"112\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>And it hit me&#8230;what if I were to create pop-ups around\u00a0these spikes.<\/p>\n<p>What if I were to find the content that my readers\u00a0loved the most and build my pop-ups and incentives around those?<\/p>\n<p>Instead of doing what most people do and creating a Toolkit or Workshop or eBook about my broad topic, what if I paid attention to what people have already expressed interest in and give them more of that?<\/p>\n<p>So I did.<\/p>\n<h2>That&#8217;s when I wrote down my Top 10 traffic days\u00a0of all time<\/h2>\n<p>After writing down my top 10 traffic days of all time, I noticed a trend.<\/p>\n<p>My readers\u00a0like it when I talk about how to grow an\u00a0email list. So, I scrapped the old pop-up and created this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Videofruit_-_step_by_step_formulas_to_grow_your_business_with_video_1970256C.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"323\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Videofruit_-_step_by_step_formulas_to_grow_your_business_with_video_1970256C.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"323\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>The first 1,000 viewers converted at 9.6%<\/p>\n<p>The next 5,000 viewers converted at 9.2%<\/p>\n<p>Now, after being shown over 17,000 times the overall conversion rate has settled at 6.8%.<\/p>\n<h2>Let&#8217;s take a look at how this would play out in real life<\/h2>\n<p>First, lets examine\u00a0how two popular bloggers could implement the Spike Formula. Then we&#8217;ll jump back into the tactical and I&#8217;ll show YOU exactly how to set this up.<\/p>\n<p>First up, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Hyatt<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the pop-up that Michael has been running on his site for the past several months.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Michael_Hyatt___Intentional_Leadership_197026DE.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"714\" height=\"420\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Michael_Hyatt___Intentional_Leadership_197026DE.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"714\" height=\"420\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><strong>(Note<\/strong>: The funnel that this eBook flows into is genius. I did a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/blog\/michael-hyatts-new-sales-funnel-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">full write up about it here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Here is the problem though.<\/p>\n<p>Michael&#8217;s &#8220;spikes&#8221; have nothing to do with tools.<\/p>\n<p>Do people ask him about what tools he uses? Absolutely! Some of his readers are interested that.<\/p>\n<p>However, a quick search will show us that tools are low on the priority list of his readers. Take a look at the\u00a0chart below.<\/p>\n<p>These are his top 7 posts in the past 6 months sorted by social shares.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 568px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/michaelhyatt_com_-_Top_Content_Search_1970284E.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"759\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/michaelhyatt_com_-_Top_Content_Search_1970284E.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"759\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chart provided by Buzzsumo.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Only one of these is partially related to tools.<\/p>\n<p>His most popular posts are on leadership and productivity.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of offering this eBook he should be using\u00a0the topics that his readers have already told him they were most interested in.<\/p>\n<p>I would start with his most shared post &#8220;Why people sleep longer achieve more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are three\u00a0ways he could build an opt-in incentive around this, all of which would take less than 2 hours to setup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option #1:<\/strong> Simply direct them back to the blog post.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost<\/strong> $0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time<\/strong>: 60 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option #2:<\/strong> Put the information in this post in a downloadable PDF.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost<\/strong>: &lt;$500<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time<\/strong>:\u00a0120 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option #3:<\/strong> Create a checklist that his readers could follow that helped them\u00a0wake up earlier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost<\/strong>: &lt;$500<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time<\/strong>: 120 minutes<\/p>\n<p>Based on his traffic numbers and my experience working with similar sites, Michael could see conversion rates in the 3-5% range for this opt-in.<\/p>\n<h2>How Jeff Goins can improve his pop-up<\/h2>\n<p>Currently, <a href=\"https:\/\/goinswriter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff<\/a> uses a scrolling pop-up.<\/p>\n<p>A scrolling pop-up only shows when a user has scrolled to a particular section of the page. When they reach that magic spot in the page, the pop-up shows in the bottom right corner.<\/p>\n<p>This is what his pop-up looks like.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/What_to_Do_With_Your_One_and_Only_Story__Memoir_Giveaway____Goins__Writer_19702C15.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"664\" height=\"459\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/What_to_Do_With_Your_One_and_Only_Story__Memoir_Giveaway____Goins__Writer_19702C15.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"664\" height=\"459\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Presently, Jeff offers an eBook and a manifesto as opt-in incentives.<\/p>\n<p>However, a quick look at his most shared post over the last 6 months reveals what his readers are <strong>more<\/strong> interested in.<\/p>\n<p>His <a href=\"https:\/\/goinswriter.com\/worst-mistake\/\" target=\"_blank\">most shared post<\/a> this year received 4,049 shares while the <a href=\"https:\/\/goinswriter.com\/mess\/\" target=\"_blank\">second <\/a>received 1,706. That&#8217;s more than a 2x differential.<\/p>\n<p>That is a spike!<\/p>\n<p>So, how can he use this spike to increase his opt-in rate?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve come up with two options.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option #1:<\/strong>\u00a0Simply direct them back to the blog post.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of\u00a0using the hook &#8220;Free eBooks and Updates&#8221; repurpose the title of that most popular post and use this hook &#8220;Find out the worse mistake you are making.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then when his users opt-in they are subscribed to his email list and automatically redirected to that\u00a0post.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost<\/strong>\u00a0$0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time<\/strong>: &lt; 60 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option #2:<\/strong>\u00a0Create a separate landing page with a video version of this post<\/p>\n<p>This is the same basic concept as suggested in option #1 except that he would make a video version of the post and setup a WordPress page that the user is redirected to when they opt-in.<\/p>\n<p>We did something similar with client Jon Acuff recently by taking a Youtube video post, setting up a separate landing page, writing a few quick notes about the video then redirecting all pop-up traffic to that page.<\/p>\n<p>The first version of that\u00a0pop-up converted at 2.9%,<\/p>\n<p>(<strong>Note<\/strong>: You can see that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evernote.com\/shard\/s61\/sh\/5f738396-3d45-4549-9e22-d2ea7569890a\/44651a54c6ab26814749e0057891808b\/deep\/0\/Jon-Acuff---Author---Speaker---Awesome.png\" target=\"_blank\">pop-up here<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/acuff.me\/thank-you-before-go\/\" target=\"_blank\">landing page here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Over time\u00a0and with some fine tuning we&#8217;ve been able to increases Jon&#8217;s conversion rate to 3.5%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost<\/strong>\u00a0$0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time<\/strong>: 150 minutes<\/p>\n<h2>How can you do the same thing?<\/h2>\n<p><em>&#8220;Ok, ok, ok Bryan, I get it. I need to have a better system in place for my pop-ups. SHOW ME HOW TO DO IT!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>First, I&#8217;ll\u00a0show you each step of the process\u00a0and then give you a few templates to help you create your high converting pop-up.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Identify past popular content<\/h3>\n<p>To do this log into your Google Analytics account and set your date back 6-12 months.<\/p>\n<p>This will show you\u00a0all of your traffic spikes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Audience_Overview_-_Google_Analytics_19703142.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"299\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Audience_Overview_-_Google_Analytics_19703142.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"299\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h2>Step 2:\u00a0Engineer\u00a0your opt-in bonus<\/h2>\n<p>Do 5-10 minutes of research to see what these traffic spikes coincide with.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Was there a blog post you wrote that really resonated with your audience?<\/li>\n<li>Did you guest post on someone elses site?<\/li>\n<li>Did you have a big product launch?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then repurpose the content and hook\u00a0that coincides with your most common spike into an opt-in bonus<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong>: I had\u00a06 big spikes (including my biggest traffic day ever) that coincided with me talking about building an email list. So, I created a pop-up entitled &#8220;Grow your email list 358% in the next 30 days.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Design the pop-up and write the copy<\/h2>\n<p>The last part is to write your <strong>hook<\/strong> and <strong>design<\/strong> the pop-up itself.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a quick and easy framework that will help you come up with your hook.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wistia_embed\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/snnfse59wz?videoFoam=true\" name=\"wistia_embed\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>And that take us to the last part, design.<\/h2>\n<p>The design of your pop-up is\u00a0vital.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve spent A LOT of time studying this.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 8 months I&#8217;ve analyzed and curated over 2,000 pop-ups.
