I’ve been\u00a0hanging out and working with Noah Kagan<\/a> and his team at Appsumo all week.<\/p>\n

I tend to hole up in my office in Nashville and only come out on Saturdays and Sundays for fresh air. It’s been a nice change of pace to work around other creative people and you know…see other human beings\u00a0during the day.<\/p>\n

Funny story…<\/p>\n

We flew in Sunday night and spent the rest of the day touring the city. Afterwards we came to our little 2nd story cottage\u00a0and crashed. Then somewhere around 4 a.m. on Monday it started.<\/p>\n

A rooster commenced\u00a0crowing or yodeling or whatever male\u00a0chickens\u00a0do…at the top of his lungs!<\/p>\n

AT 4 AM!<\/strong><\/p>\n

It isn’t like we are off in the stix somewhere\u00a0we are in a densely populated urban area of Austin (pop. 800,000+).<\/p>\n

Anyway, since I’m fairly obsessed with my business and learning everything I can from any source possible, I became intrigued. I did what any sensible person would do and Googled, ‘Why do roosters crow?”<\/p>\n

I thought, “maybe there is some super interesting\u00a0answer\u00a0that will fascinate me enough to prevent me from strangling the little creature.”<\/p>\n

Turns out there is.<\/p>\n

Check this out:<\/strong><\/p>\n

In short, they\u00a0crow because something triggers them. In our case it is\u00a0the\u00a0increasing quantities of\u00a0light while\u00a0the sun is rising.<\/p>\n

This got me thinking about my post last week<\/a> on\u00a0pop-ups.<\/p>\n

Most people have a pop-up that is triggered by one thing, time<\/strong>. If you visit one of these\u00a0website for 3 seconds, you get a pop-up.<\/p>\n

But just like the chicken, that’s annoying. It interrupts what you were trying to do (in my case sleeping<\/strong> and in your case reading<\/strong> the website).<\/p>\n

There are 7\u00a0different ways<\/strong> that I have discovered to trigger pop-ups and none of them involve time or annoying your customers.<\/p>\n

After last week’s breakdown of how I collected 1,000 email addresses with a poorly designed pop-up, my buddy Greg emailed me to ask how he could make one\u00a0for his site<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I didn’t send that.<\/p>\n

That’s when I realized it was a little bit of a pain in the butt\u00a0to use the [content_upgrade id=”16″]swipe file I gave out[\/content_upgrade] last week.<\/p>\n

So, what I did was turn that swipe file into an editable\u00a0Keynote template. Then I proceeded to make a pop-up for Greg using all of the strategies that \u00a0I laid out last week.<\/p>\n

I came up with this pop-up in less than 5 minutes:<\/p>\n
