Which means it&#8217;s harder (smaller audience).<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2:<\/strong> It&#8217;s extremely niche. Hammocking? Is that even a thing?<\/p>\n<p>Challenge accepted.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what I did next&#8230;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Step 1: Manually reach out to 50\u00a0people\u00a0and invite them to the\u00a0list.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Most people make list building way too hard on themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They start by writing content, creating <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/blog\/lead-magnet\/\">lead magnets<\/a> and trying to get complete strangers to join their list.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s silly.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, what you should do (and what I teach in the\u00a0course) is to start by getting Eager Sneezers on your list.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s an Eager Sneezer?<\/p>\n<p>An Eager Sneezer is someone you ALREADY have a relationship with who knows people that fit your target demographic.<\/p>\n<p>Your mom.<br \/>\nYour aunt.<br \/>\nYour best friend.<\/p>\n<p>Then you ask them to invite someone they think might be interested in learning more about the topic you&#8217;re focused on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let me show you how it works&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the first people I invited to join my list was my friend Joel.<\/p>\n<p>This is the email I sent him:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/blog-graphs_key_1AF4814F.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"448\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/blog-graphs_key_1AF4814F.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"448\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Joel is a Sneezer.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0doesn&#8217;t live in Nashville but he knows a bunch of people who do.<\/p>\n<p>And since Joel is a Sneezer, he tends to tell other people about new stuff he finds.<\/p>\n<p>This was Joel&#8217;s answer to my invitation:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/blog-graphs_key_1AF48166.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"186\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/blog-graphs_key_1AF48166.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"186\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fast forward:<\/strong>\u00a0By the end of the 48-hour challenge, Joel\u00a0had referred 22 other people to join.<\/p>\n<p>22!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/\u2039_32islands_\u2014_WordPress_1AF46C97.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"59\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/\u2039_32islands_\u2014_WordPress_1AF46C97.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"59\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>I rinsed and repeated this process for the first 12 hours of the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Church friends.<br \/>\nNeighbors.<br \/>\nFamily members.<br \/>\nOld work friends.<\/p>\n<p>I went through all of the\u00a0contacts in my phone and email account, then sent all of them a personal\u00a0invite.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The results<\/strong>: 46\u00a0subscribers in 12\u00a0hours.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">12&#8217;ish hours in&#8230;.46 subscribers. 5\u00a0people you know\u00a0well (family, friends and coworkers).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Action Item #2:<\/strong> Send each person a personalized invitation to join your list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Action Item #3:<\/strong> Manually add their email addresses to your list (no landing pages needed).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Action Item #4:<\/strong> Rinse and repeat until you hit 50 subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <strong>YESTERDAY.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He started with a list size of 0\u00a0and ended the day with<strong>\u00a0a list of\u00a048 new subscribers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" next?<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Step 2:<\/strong>\u00a0Incentivize your Eager Sneezers to invite more people to your list.<\/h1>\n<p>The next\u00a0stage was\u00a0to get those first subscribers to INVITE\u00a0ONE FRIEND to join my list.<\/p>\n<p>Dream for a minute.<\/p>\n<p>If all 50 of your subscribers got just one friend to join\u00a0your\u00a0list&#8230;it would double process\u00a0for doing just this.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t have time for that.<\/p>\n<p>So I jumped ahead to\u00a0Module 3\u00a0where (among other things) we cover <strong>marketing giveaways<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I did a quick straw poll to my list to see what item would turn them on.<\/p>\n<p>What product or service did they covet?<\/p>\n<p>Answer = canoes and hammocks.<\/p>\n<p>One hour later, I had this giveaway page up:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" to\u00a0my new list of 50 subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>The goal was simple: get them to share it with everyone they knew so all of their friends would join.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is the email I giveaway!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BOOM!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Giveaways_\u2039_32islands_\u2014_WordPress_1AF47A43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"883\" height=\"198\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Giveaways_\u2039_32islands_\u2014_WordPress_1AF47A43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"883\" height=\"198\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>After importing everyone\u00a0into MailChimp and getting rid of the\u00a0fake email addresses, I had <strong>205 subscribers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That ended the first\u00a024 It&#8217;s super easy to set up and will also help you grow your email list.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>FAQ<\/strong>: &#8220;But Bryan, you spent $800 on prizes. I don&#8217;t have that kind of money. So this method is stupid. I quit!&#8221;<\/h1>\n<p>First of all, quit whining.<\/p>\n<p>Second, I didn&#8217;t spend a dime.<\/p>\n<p>To build a giant email list, a giant business or anything worth your time and effort, <strong>there are tons of little obstacles that pop up.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Web hosting.<br \/>\nWeb design.<br \/>\nWhat email provider to use.<br \/>\nHow to pay for canoes you are giving away.<\/p>\n<p>Lot&#8217;s of stupid stuff. And those things can easily trip you up in the beginning if you let them. Instead, what you should do is focus on your #1 objective. Then, when the time comes, figure out the rest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Screenshot_5_1_15__10_27_PM_1AF47BD4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"409\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Screenshot_5_1_15__10_27_PM_1AF47BD4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"409\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><strong>Case in point<\/strong>: How am I going to actually give away a canoe and hammock when I don&#8217;t own either?<\/p>\n<p>There are a few options&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option #1:<\/strong> I could go buy them. (Not desirable.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option #2:<\/strong> I could use the proceeds I make from my product launch to buy them. (Risky. Don&#8217;t know\u00a0how much I&#8217;ll make.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option #3:<\/strong> Call 25 local sporting goods store\u00a0until I find one that will\u00a0sponsor the give away in exchange for exposure to my list. (Less risky. Takes work. Cold calling sucks.)<\/p>\n<p>I knew I had several solid options. But in the moment none of that mattered. What mattered was building the list and launching a\u00a0product in 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Everything else would be figured out later.<\/p>\n<p>Next week I&#8217;ll handle getting sponsors for\u00a0the canoe and hammock. I&#8217;ll make calls. Knock on doors.<\/p>\n<p>And if need be,\u00a0I&#8217;ll sell some of the junk in my garage to pay for it. Problem solved.<\/p>\n<p>Be a problem-solver. Not a whiner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You have to do the same thing when building your list<\/strong>. Get past the mental barrier of having to know the answer to every question. Instead, focus on execution.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t screw your subscribers in the process. NEVER lie to people. [\/su_note]<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Successfully launch a product to the list.<\/h1>\n<p>This part was tough.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly?<\/p>\n<p>I had no idea how I was going to pull this off when I started.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I actively tried to figure out a way to bail out of the challenge shortly after announcing I was doing it on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>My normal method of product validation and launching takes 2 to 3 weeks.\u00a0It also takes having an established relationship with my\u00a0list.<\/p>\n<p>I had neither.<\/p>\n<p>I had a core group of 50-ish friends and acquaintances and 150 of their friends (who had no idea who I was).<\/p>\n<p><strong>How on earth can I get them to buy something from me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, I just talked to 3 people on the list.<\/p>\n<p>I threw\u00a0out a few ideas and asked\u00a0which one they would buy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option #1:<\/strong> A nice hammock that costs less than $50<br \/>\n<strong>Option #2:<\/strong> A guide of all the coolest outdoor locations in Nashville<\/p>\n<p>Option #2 was the winner.<\/p>\n<p>I threw up a quick page so they could pre-order the guide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is what that page looked like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Explorer_s_Guide_to_Middle_Tennessee_1AF47DC6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"703\" height=\"863\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Explorer_s_Guide_to_Middle_Tennessee_1AF47DC6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"703\" height=\"863\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Then I sent all three of them a link to the page.<\/p>\n<p>Only 1 bought.<\/p>\n<p>Next, I sent an email to the entire list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is the email I sent:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Untitled_4_001_1AF47F2E.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"830\" height=\"3105\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/Untitled_4_001_1AF47F2E.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"830\" height=\"3105\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>And by the end of the 48-hour deadline, <strong>13 people had purchased the book<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Total sales = <strong>$247.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Total subscribers = <strong>205.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">What happens next?<\/h1>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to take off 3 days in July to\u00a0make the book.<\/p>\n<p>Then deliver it to my 13 customers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are a few ideas on how to grow this further:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Do a giveaway for one hammock per month but confine the giveaway to the Facebook pages \u00a0for local neighborhoods (attentive, active and extremely targeted audience).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Write an article in the <em>Nashville Scene<\/em> (local publication) once per month with a link back to a sign-up form for my list.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Team up with local Instagram outdoor-focused celebrities (<a href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/nashvilleexplorersclub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">like this guy<\/a>) and co-promote each other. It was much easier to ask complete strangers.<\/p>\n<p>But what I found was the people that already knew and liked me were excited to help.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a key insight to internalize. (My website crashed.)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Doing this challenge was dumb.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m in the middle of the busiest week of my life. I&#8217;m launching a brand-new product.<\/p>\n<p>Stuff is crazy right now.<\/p>\n<p>I found out 3 hours after I started the challenge that every sale of my course for the previous 48 hours had NOT actually been charged. My shopping cart had a bug. So I had to deal with that.<\/p>\n<p>Then this morning I woke up to my entire website being down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/videofruit_com_1AF48D25.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"912\" height=\"223\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/videofruit_com_1AF48D25.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"912\" height=\"223\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is the point&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t make excuses. It would have been easy to quit. I probably should have.<\/p>\n<p>DON&#8217;T!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Takeaway #3: Talk to as many people in person as possible.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Don&#8217;t hide\u00a0behind email.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, pick up the phone and call your friends. Text them. Skype chat them. Facebook Message them.<\/p>\n<p>That was the most effective way to get people to subscribe and pay.<\/p>\n<p>And always follow up.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/blog-graphs_key_1AF49406.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"237\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/blog-graphs_key_1AF49406.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"237\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Takeaway #4: The size of your list doesn&#8217;t matter.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I do not recommend selling to your list the day that they join.\u00a0You wouldn&#8217;t do it in real life, so don&#8217;t do it online.<\/p>\n<p>Focus on communicating to them regularly to build trust\u00a0instead.<\/p>\n<p>By skipping that step, my average subscriber produced just over $1 in revenue.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s opposed to <strong>$10+ per subscriber<\/strong> on my Videofruit list (in which I&#8217;ve focused on relationship first and sales second).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/blog-graphs_key_1AF48E26.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"699\" height=\"517\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/Skitch\/blog-graphs_key_1AF48E26.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"699\" height=\"517\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><strong>Takeaway #5:\u00a0Do the right things in the right order.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to spend years building a list. Don&#8217;t get tripped up on the small stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Stop running from your pain and make your pain your motivation.<\/p>\n<p>If I would have done a better job of executing my plan, the list could have been at 500 subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is I was lazy.
