A few years back I started using Dropbox. Shortly\u00a0after I signed up, they told me that if I would refer a few friends to use their service, then they would give me more storage.<\/p>\n

Referring people is easy. So I did. And as a result\u00a0they upgraded me from 2GB of storage to 10GB.<\/p>\n

This is a smart bribe\u00a0and it’s extremely effective.<\/p>\n

How can you use this?<\/p>\n

Check out what Noah Kagan and the team over at SumoMe are doing.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Offer something for free.<\/h3>\n

SumoMe wants more people to use their product.<\/p>\n

The perfect SumoMe\u00a0prospect wants more traffic to their website.<\/p>\n

So SumoMe put together a free course<\/a> that will teach you how to get more traffic.<\/p>\n

All you need to do is enter your email to get the course.<\/p>\n

Step 2:\u00a0Once they get the free thing, bribe them to tell their friends.<\/h3>\n

Watch closely and you’ll see the bribe.<\/p>\n

Immediately after getting you to sign up, they bribe\u00a0you to get your friends to sign up.<\/p>\n

Who doesn’t want more cool free stuff?<\/p>\n

And all I have to do to get it is send a tweet? I’m in!<\/p>\n

Step 3: Lots of people\u00a0you don’t know sign up for your product.<\/h3>\n

As a result, over 9,900\u00a0people shared the\u00a0free course with their friends.<\/p>\n

With the average social media account having around 200 followers<\/a>, SumoMe was exposed to roughly 1.9 million new potential customers.<\/p>\n

And (according to Nat Eliason who worked for SumoMe at the time) they added over 2,000 subscribers to the course.<\/p>\n

All by using a smart bribe.<\/p>\n

How can you do the same thing?<\/h1>\n

Three basic steps:<\/p>\n

Step #1:<\/strong> Identify\u00a0the most popular\u00a0sign-up form on your website?<\/p>\n

For me it is my homepage<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tip<\/strong>: If you are just starting out, your homepage will be your most popular too.<\/p>\n

Step #2:<\/strong> Create a small\u00a0bonus that\u00a0incentivizes people to share the page once they opt-in.<\/p>\n

Here are a few things you could offer to incentivize people to share:<\/p>\n

Thing #1: Curated\u00a0content\u00a0from your site (past blog posts, collection of eBooks)<\/p>\n

Thing #2: Access to a private community (Slack channel or Facebook group)<\/p>\n

Thing #3: Invitation to a group Q&A session<\/p>\n

Thing #4: Anything you would normally use as a content upgrade<\/a><\/p>\n
