Let\u2019s get started!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Website Optimization Step #1: Create Your Upside-Down Homepage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first place we\u2019re going to look at is your homepage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why the homepage?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reason #1:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your home page gets more traffic than any other page on your site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reason #2:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s the front door to your business and sets the tone for every future conversation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reason #3:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Improving it is incredibly simple and you\u2019ll see results immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quick example\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few years ago, the Videofruit homepage was bringing in 150 email subscribers (leads) a week. Many websites push this call to action to the sidebar or footer. However, I\u2019ve found that by making it the first thing someone sees when they come to your site, it increases the chances of them seeing it and acting on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Part 2: Social Proof<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The social proof section indicates that you are someone to be trusted, based on the sites you have been featured on and companies you have worked with.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Part 3: Pilot Story<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pilot story is the the key to the Upside-Down Homepage. Instead of letting your best content get lost on page 10 of your blog, the pilot story highlights your best content, introduces the new reader to you and your site and then gives them a call to action to learn more. (More on that in the next step.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Part 4: Call to Action<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The call to action at the end of your pilot story works much like a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/blog\/lead-magnet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">content upgrade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a normal blog post. It takes your reader by the hand and leads them to the next thing you\u2019d like them to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Part 5: Navigation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what makes this home page \u201cupside-down.\u201d Most websites have their navigation at the very top of the page, but we found moving it to the bottom of the page increased focus and conversions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best part? You likely already have almost all the information you need to piece together your Upside-Down Homepage, even if you can\u2019t design or code. Many use social proof and some even use a road map to help their customers find their best content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But after that, it\u2019s just a mess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical website gives their visitors too many things to do. With the Upside-Down Homepage, we do the exact opposite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want you to think of your homepage as the pilot episode of a TV show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The job of that pilot episode is to hook viewers with a compelling story and get them to watch the next episode. The exact same thing is true of your homepage. We do the exact opposite. Here\u2019s the basic overview of the process:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify your blog posts that are bringing in the most traffic.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For each blog post, create a piece of bonus content specifically tied to the post\u2019s topic (this is called a Content Upgrade).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide a clear, compelling call to action that makes opting in for that piece of bonus content a logical, irresistible next step after reading the blog post (this is easier than it sounds).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s break these down step-by-step.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step #1: Identify Your Popular Posts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you followed the steps to create your Upside-Down Homepage, you\u2019ve already done this! It just needs to be <\/span><b>highly relevant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the post\u2019s topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 4 content upgrade examples from the Videofruit blog:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/blog\/webinar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow to Create a $6 Million Webinar\u201d post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I put together a bundle of 4 email outreach scripts I\u2019ve used to book partner webinars. I had already used them, so I didn\u2019t need to do anything other than bundle them into a PDF.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/blog\/start-coaching-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow to Start a Coaching Program\u201d post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I gave people the emails I used to launch the Videofruit coaching program. Which brings us to Step #3.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step #3: Add a Compelling Call to Action to Each Blog Post<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is watching the next episode of a Netflix show so irresistible? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because they spend the entire episode you\u2019re watching setting up the next one! By the time the auto-play feature kicks in, you\u2019re already primed to keep watching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why your call to action should be a natural extension of what you\u2019ve talked about in the blog post. To do that, just follow these 2 steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step #1: Create Expectation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of a blog post, you\u2019ll almost always include at least one sentence that explains to readers what they\u2019re going to get out of reading the post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, in the post about content upgrades I linked to above, I wrote the following sentence in the post\u2019s intro:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn this article, I\u2019m going to share the 11 highest-converting lead magnets from that experiment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I didn\u2019t stop there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next sentence created an expectation for the bonus content I planned on offering readers later in the post:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019ll also get downloadable free lead magnet templates and real-world examples of each.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, I even inserted a call-out box to make sure they knew they could get a free, high-value resource at the end of the post:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7301 aligncenter\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14-1024x228.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14-1024x228.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14-300x67.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14-768x171.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14.jpeg 1956w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7301 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14-1024x228.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14-1024x228.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14-300x67.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14-768x171.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-14.jpeg 1956w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><b>Step #2: Insert a Clear, Compelling Call to Action<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you pick a solid idea for your lead magnet and create the expectation for it by following the previous step, this step is incredibly easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of your post, insert a link to an opt-in form that allows people to sign up for your list and receive the content upgrade. Clearly communicate that they can get the content upgrade by clicking the link and signing up. Here\u2019s how it works.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step #1: Identify Your Most Linked-To Blog Posts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that this is most <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked-to <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog posts, which is usually a little bit different that your most popular blog posts by pageviews (which is what we looked at in website optimization steps 1 and 2).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is this important? Because Google considers quality links to pages on your site one of the biggest indicators that your content is quality and relevant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In SEO lingo, these are known as backlinks. The more quality backlinks a page on your site has, the easier it is to get that page to show up high on search results pages for topics related to your post (I\u2019m generalizing here, but that\u2019s the basic gist).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever seen SEO nerds start drooling uncontrollably, they were probably thinking about backlinks at the time. Because they\u2019re straight up <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magic <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for getting free traffic from Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By identifying the pages on your site with the most backlinks, you\u2019ll identify the pages where you can get the quickest SEO wins. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are tons of tools you can use to figure out how many people are linking to pages on your site, but the one I like the most is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahrefs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll posts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step #2: Figure Out Which Posts Aren\u2019t Ranking Well<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inevitably, on almost every website I\u2019ve ever seen, at least one of the blog posts with the most backlinks isn\u2019t ranking well for any popular Google searches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because whoever wrote the post didn\u2019t take the time to optimize it for any keywords people search for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confession: There are still tons of blog posts on Videofruit that have lots of backlinks but not very much organic traffic because I ignored doing this for the longest time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/blog\/poster-boy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My post about the Poster Boy Formula<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a prime example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I paste its URL into Ahrefs, you can see it has over 250 backlinks, yet only gets around 9 visitors a month coming from organic searches in Google:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7297 aligncenter\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you think about it, it\u2019s easy to see why Google isn\u2019t sending this post any traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPoster Boy Formula\u201d is a term I made up. Then, we\u2019re going to use Ahrefs to find out what keywords people use when they search for solutions to that problem (or answers to a question, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of the Poster Boy Formula, it shows readers how to attract more readers to their blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll click \u201cKeywords explorer\u201d at the top of Ahrefs and search for keywords related to \u201cblog traffic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7295 aligncenter\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-22-1024x398.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-22-1024x398.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-22-300x117.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-22-768x299.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7295 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-22-1024x398.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-22-1024x398.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-22-300x117.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-22-768x299.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahrefs will then give me a list of the most popular keywords related to that topic, ranked by search volume per month:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7294 aligncenter\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-23.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"876\" height=\"832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-23.jpeg 876w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-23-300x285.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-23-768x729.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 876px) 100vw, 876px\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7294 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-23.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"876\" height=\"832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-23.jpeg 876w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-23-300x285.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/website-optimization-23-768x729.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 876px) 100vw, 876px\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The top keyword is \u201chow to get traffic to your blog,\u201d which gets about 600 searches a month. That means if I optimize the Poster Boy Formula to rank for that keyword, I could expect to get a few hundred additional visitors to it each month if it makes it to the top of Google\u2019s results page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That would be much better than the 9 visitors per month it\u2019s currently getting from Google!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cKD\u201d column stands for \u201cKeyword Difficult,\u201d which is an estimate of how difficult it would be to rank in the Top 10 for that particular keyword. 49 isn\u2019t super easy, but considering the post already has over 250 backlinks, I should be in good shape. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only thing to do now is optimize the post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This, of course, is where it can get suuuuuper complicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But instead of focusing on the literally <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundreds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of possible ways to improve a page\u2019s ranking, we\u2019re going to focus on the handful of easy, quick wins that I\u2019ve seen make the biggest impact:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Thing #1: Put the keyword in the post\u2019s title<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is easy. In this case, I\u2019m going to change the title from \u201cThe \u2018Poster Boy\u2019 Formula: How I Got My First 10,000 Readers\u201d to \u201cHow to Get More Traffic to Your Blog with the Poster Boy Formula.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Thing #2: Tweak the post\u2019s URL so it contains the keyword<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another easy one. In this case, I would simply change the URL slug from \/poster-boy-formula to \/how-to-get-traffic-to-your-blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Thing #3: Rewrite the intro<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where it\u2019s important to put yourself in the shoes of someone who is googling the keyword you\u2019re trying to rank for. Do that, then re-read your post\u2019s original intro. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does it quickly communicate to that reader that their question is likely to be answered in the post? Rewrite it so it does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to include the keyword in the first paragraph of your intro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Thing #4: Use the keyword several times throughout the post\u2019s content<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for other opportunities to use the keyword throughout the post. Insert it where you can, but don\u2019t force it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Thing #5: Tweak the post\u2019s SEO description<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SEO description is that chunk of text that people will see when your post comes up in Google.
