{"id":8067,"date":"2021-08-17T12:08:48","date_gmt":"2021-08-17T12:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/?p=8067"},"modified":"2021-08-17T16:09:03","modified_gmt":"2021-08-17T16:09:03","slug":"pricing-online-courses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/?p=8067","title":{"rendered":"A Simple Pricing Strategy for Online Courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A lot of course creators\u00a0try to price their online course\u00a0by channeling their inner Einstein and calculating some mythical, perfect price that factors in every possible scenario:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The perceived value\u00a0their course delivers to customers.<\/li>\n<li>The affluence of their audience.<\/li>\n<li>What the competition\u2019s charging.<\/li>\n<li>How pressing the pain they solve is.<\/li>\n<li>How in-depth the course content is&#8230;<em>etc.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/APqEbxBsVlkWSuFpth\" width=\"434\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em>You, trying to calculate the price of your <\/em><em>online course<\/em><em>&#8230;in theory.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But here\u2019s the problem with that:<\/strong>\u00a0How in the world do you know the dollar value\u00a0of these factors? What price point\u00a0would you even pick for \u201cthe value of your course\u00a0to customers\u201d? Is that worth $100? Or $3?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all just a hypothesis. And it\u2019s one we\u2019ve taught to thousands of <!--<a href=\"https:\/\/lp.growthtools.com\/mastermind?utm_source=gc&amp;source=pricingcourse-blogpost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">-->Growth University<!--<\/a>-->\u00a0students.<\/p>\n<p>Many of our Growth University clients sell courses and have been doing so for a while before joining our program. But most of them have <em>never changed their pricing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Usually something like this:<\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s what I\u2019ve always done. Raising prices just doesn\u2019t feel right. What if it makes my subscribers mad? What if the launch income I depend on goes down?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re afraid to raise prices, that\u2019s fine. Just don\u2019t let it stop you from raising prices. Tiered pricing is one risk-free way to do this. But it\u2019s not the only way.<\/p>\n<p>You can also just raise your prices.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, we were getting more sales for our <!--<a href=\"https:\/\/lp.growthtools.com\/mastermind?utm_source=gc&amp;source=pricingcourse-blogpost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">-->Growth University coaching program<!--<\/a>-->\u00a0than we could keep up with. It\u2019s a starting point. And once you\u2019ve picked it, you need to A) evaluate how effective it is, and B) give the people who are happy to pay more a way to do so. That\u2019s what we\u2019ll cover in the rest of the post.<\/p>\n<p>For this step, keep it simple:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step #1: <\/strong>Pick a number you\u2019d like to charge. This will either be a way lower price\u00a0or way higher price\u00a0than it should be; we guarantee that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step #2:<\/strong>\u00a0Find out what others in your space with similar offerings are charging. If their program includes way more or way less than you do, it\u2019s not a good comparison.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step #3:<\/strong>\u00a0Average your chosen number with your competitors\u2019 average price, and run with it. For example: Let\u2019s say you want to charge $1,000, but your closest competitor charges $500. (1000 + 500) \u00f7 2 = 750. Your starting course price is $750.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, this is just a starting point. <strong>Do not permanently anchor your <\/strong><strong>online course pricing<\/strong><strong>\u00a0to competitors.<\/strong>\u00a0They could be leaving money on the table by undercharging. Or they might have low conversion rates because their course is priced too high or poorly positioned. Because you\u2019ll evaluate and adjust your pricing based on real-world testing, you won\u2019t need to reference their prices again.<\/p>\n<p>For example, say you teach people how to do web design, and everybody in your market charges $197. You might think there\u2019s no way you could ever charge $2,000 for that. Really? Designers wouldn\u2019t pay $2,000 for anything in their careers?<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re working on a MacBook, they have Photoshop, they have all the latest design tools, but somehow they wouldn&#8217;t pay you more money if you could solve their problem in a better way than everyone else?<\/p>\n<p>Of course not! They are <em>already<\/em>\u00a0paying a premium price\u00a0for the tools to solve that problem. Just because your market doesn&#8217;t charge something is totally irrelevant to you. It isn&#8217;t about the market \u2014 it&#8217;s about what the leads you get in front of will pay.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s important to start this process at Step 1 and pick <em>your<\/em> target price. Don\u2019t be embarrassed about it, don\u2019t overthink it, and don\u2019t let imposter syndrome speak for you. Pick the price you want to charge, and meet the competitors halfway. You\u2019ll charge a different price after testing what the market really wants to pay.<\/p>\n<p id=\"validate\">The easiest way to know that number is to set up tiered pricing (once you\u2019ve validated your course).<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Validate Your Course<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve already launched your course to your audience and they\u2019re actually buying it, you can skip this step and <a href=\"#tiered-pricing\">learn about tiered pricing in Step 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you <em>haven\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0validated your idea but you\u2019re investing time and money into course creation\u00a0anyway &#8230;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/lRmjNrQZkKVuE\" width=\"480\" height=\"238\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Stop whatever you\u2019re doing and do validation instead. It is the single most important element of making a course.<\/p>\n<p>What do we mean by \u201cvalidate your course\u201d? Sell copies of the course to your target audience\u00a0before you invest hundreds of hours into its creation. Never, ever build a product without concrete proof that it will make money for you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.growthtools.com\/blog\/creating-and-selling-online-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">You can see examples and detailed instructions for how to do this in Step 3 of our post on creating and selling online courses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the basic steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify 50-100 of the most engaged members of your audience.<\/li>\n<li>Ask them if they\u2019d be willing to give you feedback on a project you\u2019re working on.<\/li>\n<li>If they say yes, thank them and ask them to:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #72d986;\">(a)<\/span> Read the product description for your upcoming course.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #72d986;\">(b)<\/span> Take a short survey about the product description. Knock off 50% for the presale. Your presale students will use a rougher version of your course than what you\u2019ll launch to your audience, so don\u2019t feel shy about offering a no-brainer, discounted price to <strong>prove<\/strong>\u00a0that someone will buy it from you. For us, that was 84 people who paid an extra $1200 each. In other words, <strong>without changing the course, we earned an extra $100K.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This strategy is why football stadiums offer skyboxes. It\u2019s why Netflix offers Basic ($8.99), Standard ($12.99), and Premium ($15.99) packages. If you want, you can offer three tiers right away and see who bites. If you suspect you\u2019ve been undercharging, for example, you might test a price that\u2019s double and one that\u2019s roughly doubled again. If you\u2019ve been charging $299, for example, then you could try two more tiers at $599 and $999.<\/p>\n<p>When you make sales at higher tiers, the math quickly works out in your favor. Let\u2019s walk through a hypothetical example to see how much tiered pricing can affect your bottom line. Imagine you sell a book and typically get 10 purchases a day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the first day, you sell ten books for $10. You make $100.<\/li>\n<li>On the second day, you decide to offer a fancy package for the book (complete with bonus materials like maps or video interviews). It\u2019s the same book (with perks), but you\u2019re charging $50. Say seven people buy the plain book at $10 and three buy the nicer package at $50. Now you\u2019ve made $220 in one day, <strong>more than double the previous day\u2019s revenue<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Now let\u2019s say you add a third offer for day three: a book, the bonus materials, <em>and<\/em>\u00a0a two hour meeting with you. You price it at $500. Six people buy the plain book, three buy the $50 package, and one buys the $500. While tiered pricing is an excellent way to make more money, it\u2019s not the only way to adjust price.<\/p>\n<p id=\"raise-price\">If you never raise prices on your course, you\u2019re leaving money on the table.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h.765jz647vgpy\">Step 5: Increase Your Price<\/h2>\n<p>Ready to raise your rates? You have three basic options:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create more expensive tiers.<\/li>\n<li>Run a price increase promotion.<\/li>\n<li>Offer payment plans.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These options aren\u2019t mutually exclusive. The timing is all up to you.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note:<\/em>\u00a0We\u2019re not advocating a price increase for <em>existing<\/em>\u00a0customers. If you have a membership program, don\u2019t just raise your rates out of the blue. And it works every time. You can run them at set intervals (such as every six months) or whenever you need a boost to hit your income goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s what you do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Evaluate your current pricing and decide how much to increase it.<\/li>\n<li>Tell <em>everybody<\/em>\u00a0via email, social media, Facebook groups, etc. that the price of your course\u00a0is going up.
