Especially in the times we\u2019re in now, people are really into having food shipped to their house and not having to go out to the grocery store.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">This is why Dustin decided to start out by optimizing for his own comfort level with podcast targets rather than optimizing for podcasts with food-focused audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><strong><span class=\"c5 c11\">Dustin\u2019s Podcast Targets:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">To come up with his initial list of podcasts to pitch, Dustin literally pulled out his phone, opened the podcasts app, and scrolled through the shows he already listens to frequently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">Almost all of them were business- or ecommerce-related podcasts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">That\u2019s when the idea hit him\u2014why not just get on those shows, tell the authentic story of building FireCreek Snacks with his partner Ryan, and see what happens?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><strong><span class=\"c11 c5\">The Results:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">Dustin started out by using the outreach method we teach in Growth University to write and send pitch emails to 7 podcasts (more on our pitch method later).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">Here\u2019s what\u2019s happened so far:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"c3 lst-kix_kcje184qrwrb-0 start\">\n<li class=\"c1 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c0\">7 out of the 7 podcasts he pitched said YES (even though he had zero connections to them)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"c3 lst-kix_kcje184qrwrb-0\">\n<li class=\"c1 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c0\">From the 3 episodes that have aired, FireCreek Snacks has already generated $12,000 in direct sales<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c1 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c0\">Dustin expects that total to increase to $30,000 (factoring in customer lifetime value)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">\u201cI figure every podcast that\u2019s a similar size is basically worth $4,000 up front and $10,000 long term,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\">By the way, how big\u00a0<span class=\"c14\">were<\/span><span class=\"c0\">\u00a0these podcasts?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">Dustin described them as \u201cmid-size\u201d podcasts. No.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">But Dustin hypothesized that the mass appeal nature of his product could allow him to create an \u201cimpulse buy\u201d setting by simply telling the company\u2019s story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><strong><span class=\"c11 c5\">What\u2019s Next:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">Now that Dustin has seen the power this approach can have with non-related audiences (business and ecommerce), he plans to target food- and diet-related podcasts that will likely have even higher interest in FireCreek Snacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">Specifically, he wants to focus on podcasts that touch on gluten-free living or keto dieting since FireCreek Snacks\u2019 products are a perfect fit for both.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h.cdqnuz72khyv\" class=\"c2\"><span class=\"c8\">The 3 CTAs Dustin Has Experimented with on Podcasts (and Why Yours Should Probably Be Different)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">So far, Dustin has tried three different calls-to-action to get podcast listeners to buy:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"c3 lst-kix_7fi7vklaygev-0 start\" start=\"1\">\n<li class=\"c1 c6 li-bullet-0\"><strong><span class=\"c5\">A \u201cfree + shipping\u201d offer<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c0\">\u00a0(all listeners have to do is pay shipping to get some samples of the product)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol class=\"c3 lst-kix_7fi7vklaygev-0\" start=\"2\">\n<li class=\"c1 c6 li-bullet-0\"><strong><span class=\"c5\">A specific promotion<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c0\">\u00a0FireCreek Snacks was running called the \u201cGolden Ticket Giveaway\u201d (15% off and free shipping on all of their snack bundles + the chance to win a $1,000 \u201cGolden Ticket\u201d)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c1 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c5\"><strong>A unique coupon<\/strong> code<\/span><span class=\"c0\">\u00a0that references the name of the podcast host so Dustin could track its performance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">The verdict?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">According to Dustin, they\u2019ve all been pretty much equally effective!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><strong><span class=\"c11 c5\">One caveat though\u2026<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">If you don\u2019t run an ecommerce business that sells relatively inexpensive products, promo-heavy CTAs probably won\u2019t be as effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">For example, let\u2019s say you sell a higher priced product like an online course or coaching services (like many of our other clients).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">Typically, we\u2019ve found that it\u2019s much more effective to promote a free resource like a lead magnet, free course, or even strategy call rather than giving listeners a direct CTA to buy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">Even though some listeners may be ready to buy your product, it can still take a few additional touch points to complete sales that are worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c0\">Plus, there will also be a chunk of listeners who grow to like and trust you during the interview, but aren\u2019t sure it\u2019s the right time for them to buy quite yet.
